Tulip Bag

Today we're going to look at making the Tulip Bag. This bag is made up of 4 finished panels which are joined together from the outside.

Materials

To make this bag you will need:

- 0.5m Main Fabric

- 0.4m Lining Fabric

- 0.4m x 20" (50cm) Wadding

- 4 Buttons (Optional)

Method - Check the direction of the fabric before cutting.

Step 1

From your main fabric, cut:

- 4 rectangles measuring 6" x 20" (For the main part of the bag)

- 2 rectangles 4" x 20" (For the handles - Not featured in the photo)

From the lining fabric cut:

- 4 rectangles 6" x 20"

From wadding Cut:

- 4 rectangles 5 3/4" x 20"

Step 2

- Place 1 Main and 1 Lining fabric rights sides together.

- Place Wadding on top

- Pin and sew all around, leaving a gap on lower edge for turning.

Step 3

- Trim corners, turn and press.

- Fold under the raw edges and pin in place

- Repeat for the remaining 3 panels

Step 4

- Lay bottom edges of panels together as in photo with right sides facing up

- Using a zigzag or other decorative stitch, sew pairs together.

- Match centre seam and join both pieces together

Step 5

- From the inner corners, bring sides together and sew using a wide zigzag or decorative stitch. It is a little awkward at first but after the first few stitches the sides come together well.

- Sew all 4 sides in the same way.

- You will notice that when bringing the sides together, one side will be longer than the other. This forms the tulip points.

Step 6 (To make the straps)

- Fold the 4" x 20" rectangles in half length ways and press.

- Open out and fold the outer edges to the middle, then press.

- Fold over again and press.

The strap will now be 1" wide

- Top stitch down both sides

Step 7

Fold the ends of the strap under by half an inch and fasten with a pin to the inside of the points of the bag.

- Repeat with the 2nd strap.

- Top stitch around the top edge of the bag, catching in the straps as you go around the points.

- Sew on the buttons through the strap. The buttons are optional but will help to give extra strength to the straps when sewn on.

The finished bag

- To make the bag stiffer, quilt the panels before making the bag

I hope you enjoy making this. I would love to see photos of your finished bag.
